Description: (curated)
Multiflash photography of Moscow Circus acrobats performing at the Boston Public Garden in 1963. Because of the complexity of the activity, Edgerton used a manually timed multiflash while an assistant kept the tumbling acrobat in the sighting tube of the powerful flash reflector. As this was a public performance, the arena lights could not be dimmed, requiring the special shutter which opened and closed with each flash of the strobe in order to exclude the intense ambient illumination.
