Description: (curated)
This high-speed photograph taken in 1938 is one of a series in which Edgerton aimed to capture the instant when the batter hits a softball, the bat actually bends and the ball caves in around the bat. See HEE-NC-38019 for that action captured. This photo was taken in a darkened room, with the sound of the ball hitting the bat triggering the flash. The microphone was just beyond the right edge of the frame of the photograph. (see "Stopping Time" (1987), pp. 54-5.)
