Description: (curated)

By placing them directly on the emulsion of his film and using a tiny electronic flash to expose the picture, Edgerton captured these miniature animals without a camera. Although this type of photograph is ordinarily called a shadow picture, the miniscule crustaceans and insect are translucent enough for the flash to reveal their interior structure. This unique method allows scientists to study marine organisms while they are alive. (see "Stopping TIme" (1987), pp.148-9). (CC)
