The card is positioned. The rifle is aimed so the bullet's path will 'cut' the card. The room is darkened. The camera shutter is opened. The rifle is fired. When the bullet's shock wave hits the microphone, it triggers the flash. Then the camera shutter is closed. I took Doc's freshman seminar, and he spent a whole Saturday morning helping me with this -- something he'd probably done hundreds of times.
